Did you know?
- In 2005, Canada generated 791 kilograms of municipal waste per capita.
- Up to 75% of household garbage is derived from organic matter and most of it can be composted.
- Our New Brunswick landfills are very clean and safe and are lined with special material so that leachate doesn't end up in our rivers and lakes.
- Opened in 1986, the Fredericton Region Solid Waste Commission (FRSWC) landfill remains one of the most environmentally advanced and economically efficient landfills in the province.
- SWC Recycling, the FRSWC's recycling arm, has operated a Blue Bin Program in the Fredericton - Oromocto area since 1988!
- In 2006, over 9,599 tonnes of material was divertes from the Fredericton landfill, and 231 tonnes of metal was recycled
- In 2006, the FRSWC constructed the Province's first Landfill Gas Management System (LGMS). Approximately 60,000 tonnes a year of CO2 equivalent will be eliminated from the atmosphere through the LGMS process.
- One tonne of recycled paper, compared to one tonne of virgin paper, saves 17 trees, 26,497 liters of water, 4,200 kWh (enough electricity for one house for 6 months) and 9.07 kg of CO2 emissions
- Recycled newsprint can be used to produce more newsprint, egg cartons, kitty litter, and construction materials such as wallboard and cellulose insulation
- Recycling an aluminum can use up to 95 per cent less energy than extracting it from new materials
- Sales of recycled products in Canada bring in about $336 million a year
